The Night Haunts of London [RARE, COLLECTABLE, 1st edition]

£65.00

Product description

This book takes the reader on a journey through the night life and poorer quarters of London in the early part of the 20th century. The author was partly seeking to discover why men (and women) both openly and clandestinely congregate in such night haunts when the rest of the world is properly asleep in bed. Without specifically referring to 'unnatural' sexual behaviour, he is clearly aiming to cast a clear light on the difficult lives of homosexuals, prostitutes, drug addicts and other 'deviants' at the time. Written in an easy, conversational style, it brings the world of London's night life into the reader's consciousness in a very direct way.

Sydney Alexander Moseley (1888-1961) was an author and journalist, who wrote a number of books of an 'investigative' nature, including: "An Amazing Seance and An Exposure", "The Truth about the Dardanelles", "With Kitchener in Cairo", "The Fleet from Within", and more. Press opinions of him were all complimentary, and included such epithets as 'fair-minded', 'a clear, independent thinker', 'agreeable sense of humour', 'a journalist who dared to speak the truth', 'a capable writer, a keen observer, and a courageous journalist'.

Our book is in good condition for its almost 100 years, bound in faded blue cloth with an impressed line border to the front cover, and the title etc in black lettering on the spine. The edges of the covers are sun-faded, and there are some marks and a clear area of colour weakness on the front cover; the spine is particularly browned, with some loss of colour near the top. There are, however, only minor signs of shelf wear (top & bottom of spine, minimal bumping of lower corners, and some irregularity of the long edges). Inside, the binding is generally firm, but there is one loose gathering near the back (pp 169-184); no pages are missing, however. The endpapers, text block edges (bottom edge is rough cut), and all pages are quite browned; a couple of small spots of foxing on the endpapers are the only signs of this, and the pages are otherwise clean.
