The Pasteur Fermentation Centennial 1857-1957

£9.99

Product description

This book, published in 1958, is the written record of a scientific symposium which was held in 1957 to commemorate 100 years since the publication of Louis Pasteur's 'Memoire sur la fermentation appelee lactique'. The book contains written versions of all of the speeches that were given, separated into a morning, afternoon, and evening program. The articles discuss topics such as trends in antibiotic research, genetics and antibiotics, and the mechanism of action of penicillin. The book also contains discussion of Pasteur himself, as well as his relation to what was then modern science.

The book itself is in relatively good condition, though it is missing the dust-jacket. The boards are covered in cloth, and there is a black and white copy of a portrait of Pasteur on the front. The back of the book does have some scuff marks. Inside, the end-papers are decorated with a detailed drawing of Pasteur at work in his laboratory. The first few pages of the book are copies of Pasteur's manuscript, including a copy of one handwritten page. There are some black and white photographs of the symposium included, as well as charts and graphs illustrating the points the speaker is making.

The Pasteur Fermentation Symposium would appeal to those interested in the history of modern medicine.
