Product description

A rather rare edition of this classic religious allegory, first published in 1678. The book has a frontispiece and 11 further evocative illustrations by Frank C. Papé. Grey-green cloth boards, with decorative gilt titling to the front cover and the spine. There are some stains and marks to the covers and spine, and one small area towards the upper front edge where the cloth has rubbed away leaving a white mark. The head and tail of the spine are lightly crushed, and there is some wear to the corners, with the lower corners bumped. The upper page edges are gilt. There is foxing to the front pastedown and the prelims. up to and including the half title page, also to the last two numbered pages of the book (314/315) containing "The Author's Vindication", and the endpapers and rear pastedown. The name of a previous owner appears neatly in ink on the front free end paper. The half title page and title page are protected by tissue guards. The pages are age toned but otherwise clean. The book is tightly bound, and overall in good condition.
