The Poetical Works of Henry Wadswoth Longfellow

£45.00

Product description

Published in 1855, this is a collection of the works of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It contains long lyric poems such as Evangeline, as well as plays Longfellow wrote, and his translations of poems from multiple different languages including French, German and Anglo-Saxon. Longfellow was one of the Fireside Poets of New England, whose domestic themes and messages of morality presented in conventional poetic forms deeply shaped their era.

This book has beautifully patterned gold gilt edges, as well as an embossed leather cover. The spine is discoloured, and does show signs of wear. There is a small crack at the bottom centre of the spine, and part of the binding is coming away at the top of the spine. There are also some loose pages within the book, which spans page 307-318, though they are still attached by a thread. The book also contains illustrations by John Gilbert, which are all protected by a thin piece of paper vellum. There is an inscription in the front of the book, and some of the pages are affected by light foxing. The endpapers are a colourful pattern, which only adds to the visual allure of this book.

This collection would appeal to fans of 19th century poetry, particularly from America. It would also appeal to collectors of books from the period.
