Visitation of England and Wales - Volumes 1 to 4

£230.00

Product description

These 'Heraldic visitations' were tours of inspection undertaken by Kings of Arms (and more often by junior officers of arms or Heralds as deputies) throughout England, Wales and Ireland. Their purpose was to regulate and register the coats of arms of nobility, gentry and boroughs, and to record pedigrees. They took place from 1530 to 1688, and their records (akin to an upper class census) provide important source material for historians and genealogists. The Visitation of England and Wales comes in 21 volumes recording the lineage of various families, their armorial bearings etc, and additionally has 12 volumes of further notes to the 21 and addenda and corrections at the end of each volume. These are the first four volumes, privately printed from 1893 to 1896. Only 500 numbered copies printed of each volume; these 4 volumes are all number 423, signed by one of the editors or publishers. Quarter vellum and cloth boards in fair condition. Spines are slightly rubbed, stained and damaged. Gilt lettering to spine. No dust jacket. Top edge gilt, deckle edges; edges age-toned. Front matter toned but free of foxing. Contents clean and in good condition. Illustrated with many plates, some in colour.
