Yr Athraw (The Teacher) was a monthly Welsh language magazine published between 1836-1910 primarily for a readership of Baptist Sunday School teachers, though subscriptions were wider. Articles dealt with a wide range of subjects from a Christian perspective including theology, temperance, music, poetry, literature, biography etc. This is a complete collection of Vols III, IV and V (1838, 1839, 1840) in two bound volumes published by J.M. Jones of Llanidloes.
Early editions of this periodical are now very difficult to source.
Both volumes have quarter leather cloth hardcovers and full leather spines with gilt decoration and titles. In addition, the later volume has raised bands and decorated endpapers. Both contain 288 pp. including indexes, and measure 13.5cm x 22cm.
Both books are in fair to good condition considering their age. The spine of the earlier volume is becoming detached from the front hardcover which shows shelf wear and bumping. However, the binding remains tight. The pages are lightly tanned for a book of this age and foxing is sporadic. The hardcovers of the later volume shows similar shelf wear and bumping but remain intact, as is the binding. The pages are slightly more tanned but foxing is again sporadic. Four pages have had text part removed and there are couple of instances of markings by previous readers.
NOTE: The text is entirely in the Welsh language.
