ZURI DESIGN Fairtrade safari animal soapstone coasters

£19.99

Product description

Zuri Design works directly with small producer groups and workshops in Kenya and Uganda.   Zuri Design was founded in 2003 by Helen Scanlan.  After working in Kenya and Uganda as a volunteer over a number of years,  Helen saw  the opportunity to alleviate poverty through the trade of handmade gifts and jewellery, working with small fair trade workshops and individual artisans. Zuri Design started trading on various market stalls across the UK in 2003.
These safari animal soapstone coasters are hand carved and sanded before being painted and engraved. Finally they are waxed and polished. They are made in Kisii, Western Kenya by the Art Safi Self Help Group. There are 6 coasters in the set, the animal designs being elephant, rhino, giraffe, zebra, wild deer and lion, which has a minor chip to the edge and can be seen on the lion image. The coasters can be cleaned with a dry cloth and beeswax. Overall weight 900 g dimensions coasters 9 cm x 0.5 cm holder 11 cm x 5 cm.

If you're curious, the people of Scandinavia began using soapstone during the Stone Age, and it helped them enter the Bronze Age when they discovered that it could be easily carved into moulds for casting metal objects such as knife blades and spearheads. They were among the first to discover the ability of soapstone to absorb heat and radiate it slowly. That discovery inspired them to make soapstone cooking pots, bowls, cooking slabs, and hearth liners. Throughout the world, in locations where the soapstone is exposed at the surface, it was one of the first rocks to be quarried. Soapstone's special properties continue to make it the "material of choice" for a wide variety of uses. There you go.
